At the start, I found it very hard, my mind kept wandering all over the place, and it was like trying to look after a naughty child! but I persevered, and it got easier. Now I can reach a state of total relaxation in a matter of minutes and the sense of peace, total calm, and focus is amazing. I finish my meditation session, and I find myself able to concentrate with 100% clarity on the task I am engaged in. Like medication, it seems to wear off after a while, but another session of even a few minutes soon sees me back where I need to be.
If thoughts stray into my head that i don't want, I acknowledge them, and then let them just drift away again, and re-focus again on my chosen subject, mantra, or sound, or even just banish all thought and enjoy the simple world of nothing.
There are many methods of meditation, you have to experiment, and choose one that suits you. There is no one size fits all here, you have to find something that works and stick with it, then once you are happy with your method, try to improve it, develop it, but above all do it!
If you are finding successful meditation a challenge it may even be something as simple as where you sit in a room, believe me, don't underestimate the difference sitting a different part of the room can make to you, and not just for meditation, try it in the rest of your life too!
The best time to meditate I find, is first thing on a morning, while it is still dark and cool, and you are close to producing natural alpha frequencies, and then 'topping up' through your day, finishing with a final session to review the positive aspects of your day. This works for me, but may not work for you, all I can do is tell you that there are major benefits here that cannot be ignored. Meditation has been proven to reduce stress levels, promote recovery, and will always improve your mood!
It would be folly to try to write a post on meditation and make it an all encompassing thesis. It can't be done, there isn't enough server space in the world to do that! All I can do is to tell you it works, and encourage you to give it a go. When an unreconstructed pie eating northern male, Firefighter, ex garage Mechanic tells you that meditation improves your life, then surely it can work in your life too. I'm no sandal wearing, lentil eating flower child, (chance would be good!) but I don't have to be. This stuff only works whoever you are, and whatever you do.
Now I'm happy with my technique, I'm looking to push it further all the time and reach deeper levels of relaxation. I'm not afraid to try new methods either, there are many cultures around the world that have their own tried and tested techniques, so why not try them all!
My ultimate aim is to explore Astral Projection, and the possibilities of this are endless, but I guarantee I will keep you informed of my progress, and inform you of any exiting new development.
If you want a truly amazing method of relaxation, log onto www.mindstore.com and see the fantastic life changing stuff that Jack Black is doing there (no, not that Jack Black)! I simply can not put into one blog post how good MindStore is. See for yourself, I won't say an more than that, but you can bet I will be doing a full review of the MindStore method in a future post, and you don't want to miss that one! I promise you!
So there you go, meditation works, and has been proved to work for thousands of years, incorporate it into your life and reap the benefits!
